Cape Verde Guide
The Cape Verde islands are 380 miles (620 km) west of Senegal, West Africa. Officially known as The Republic of Cape Verde, the islands cover over 4000 Square kilometres.
The Cape Verde islands are split into two contrasting styles. Six of the islands located in the western sector and are characterised by their dramatic mountainous landscapes and lush green forests. The remaining three are best known for their long white sandy beaches and clear waters.
The main spoken languages in Cape Verde are Portuguese and Criuolo, however English is widely spoken throughout. The national currency is the Cape Verde Escudo (CVE), the euro is also widely used due to the close historical and financial ties with Portugal.
The Cape Verde islands have the coolest temperatures of any country in the West African region, similar to that in the Canary Islands.
The capital of Cape Verde is Praia, Santiago. The major national industries are salt mining, sugar cane, Bananas, shoe and textile manufacturing.
Perhaps the most popular island is the fast growing Sal. The flat landscape and long sandy beaches has encouraged foreign investment and tourism. Sal has been of particular interest to water sport enthusiasts, recent surfing and windsurfing world championships have established Sal as a world class heaven for water sport lovers. The new international airport has made it possible to travel direct to Sal from many European destinations. While Sal is currently the most popular island for foreign investment, it is projected that Boavista and Sao Vicente will be the next Cape Verde property hot spots.
